Limerick groups and organisations encouraged to get involved in Heritage Week

  • National Heritage Week 2019

The Heritage Council is inviting organisations, individuals, businesses and community groups to get involved in National Heritage Week 2019, which takes place from 17 - 25 August.

National Heritage Week is a celebration of Ireland's built, natural and cultural heritage and aims to generate awareness, appreciation and preservation of our wonderful resources.

Getting involved is a great opportunity to shine a light on the fantastic work that is carried out in communities and is the perfect occasion to put your organisation on the map.

So, if you've got something you’re proud of, why not let people know and register an event? New event organisers are particularly welcome.

To find out everything you need to know about registering your event, visit www.heritageweek.ie.

This year The Heritage Council’s chosen theme for Heritage Week is the celebration of Pastimes and Past Times.

Event organisers are encouraged to take a stroll through history and explore the unique ways in which we choose to spend our free time and how this has evolved throughout the years.

National Heritage Week 2019 has two special themed days:

Wild Child Day - Wednesday 21 August: On this day, event organisers are encouraged to host events specifically for children, from history hunts and storytelling sessions to crafts workshops.

Water Heritage Day - Sunday 25 August: Together with the Local Authority Waters Programme, we celebrate our most precious natural resource in all its forms, from the sea to rivers, lakes and ponds.

Events registered before the deadline of 31 May will be included in a printed event guide, which will be distributed across Ireland to OPW sites, museums, libraries, local authorities, selected hotels and tourist offices.

Event details will also be included in a county guide, where available.

Event registration for the website listings will remain open until August. Coordinated by the Heritage Council since 2005 and supported by Limerick City and County Council, National Heritage Week has become one of Ireland’s largest cultural events.

Last year, more than half a million people attended in excess of 2,200 events across the country, most of which were hosted by communities, volunteers and individuals who champion Ireland’s heritage in its many forms.

Event registration for the printed Heritage Week guide closes on 31st May. Events can be registered on www.heritageweek.ie. All registered events are also listed on this website.
