  • Limerick City and County Council

Limerick City and County Council has welcomed the announcement of a €57.4m investment in flood relief projects for Limerick city and county.

The funding by the Office of Public Works (OPW) is part of a €1bn flood relief programme announced by the Government today (Thursday).

In this first tranche of funding to be released, it was announced that Limerick city and environs (including King’s Island) will receive €55.9m, with the remainder on schemes in Castleconnell, Rathkeale and Athea. This funding means extra protection for 1193 properties in Limerick from potential risk of flooding.

The following areas have been included in the broader Limerick City scheme:

  • City Centre quays
  • Thomondgate
  • Corbally
  • Annacotty
  • The Docklands
  • Condell Road
  • Ballinacurra
  • Ballysimon
  • OId Cratloe Road

Detailed design works are currently in preparation for the King’s Island section of the city scheme.

It is intended that following adoption of the plans by Limerick City and County Council, the schemes will move to the detailed design and construction phases.

Mayor of Limerick city and county, Cllr Stephen Keary has broadly welcomed today’s announcement. “Limerick City and County Council welcomes both the opportunity to bring relief to the communities affected by flooding and also to work in conjunction with the OPW to bring these schemes to fruition. The delivery of the CFRAMS (Catchment, Flood Risk, Assessment and Management) Programme will also facilitate continued economic success and sustainable development within Limerick. The influence of climate change will be a challenge for local authorities to address and this announcement of funding today enables us to provide much needed flood defences in at-risk communities.”

A new website, www.floodinfo.ie has been launched where people can view the community risk and measures in place, underway, and now proposed, to tackle flood risk nationally.
