The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllr Kieran O’Hanlon is wishing University of Limerick-based athlete Thomas Barr the best of luck in the Olympic 400 metres hurdles final in Rio.

“It’s a huge achievement for anyone to make an Olympic final, and it’s all the more special as Thomas has had to battle his way back from lengthy injuries earlier this year. In winning his semi-final in an Irish Record, Thomas has made history by becoming the first Irish sprinter to reach an Olympic Final since Bob Tisdall, at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles.”

“Let’s hope history repeats itself 84 years later, as Bob won a gold medal in the same event that Thomas competes in. There will be huge crowds gathering at the UL Sports Arena to watch his race later and he can be assured the whole of Limerick is behind him as he’s goes for gold,” the Mayor said.

All of Limerick is behind Barr as he competes today and the University of Limerick Arena is inviting supporters to cheer him on at a live screening of the event from 3.30pm today.
