Part 8 Development: Quimper Square, Cruises Street, Limerick

In accordance with Part XI of the (Planning and Development) Acts 2000 (as amended) and Part 8, Article 81 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (as amended), notice is hereby given that Limerick City and County Council proposes to carry out the following development at Quimper Square, Cruises Street, Limerick City.

The proposed development comprises the construction of a new feature canopy within Quimper Square, Cruises Street, Limerick City. The development works will consist of:

  • Weathered steel/Corten steel material.
  • Inverted castellated centre covered with clear glass.
  • Canopy structure over 6.5m in height and 11m wide.
  • Concealed rainwater downpipes within the legs of the structure.
  • Up lighters at the base of each leg.
  • Downlighters at the interface of the legs and arching moment.
  • All associated site works. 

The canopy is designed as a landmark feature within the public realm, serving as a focal point for social interaction and community activity. The architectural treatment of the structure is intended to enhance the visual quality of the space, strengthen local character, and encourage greater use of the area by providing an attractive and functional meeting place.

Limerick City and County Council, in accordance with the requirements of Article 120(1)(a) and Article 120(1)(b)(i) of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (as amended), has carried out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Screening of the proposed development. Having regard to the information specified under Schedule 7A of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (as amended), and following consideration of the nature, size and location of the proposed development, the Local Authority has determined that there is no likelihood of significant effects on the environment arising from the proposed development and, accordingly, that a full Environmental Impact Assessment is not required.

A person may, however, within 4 weeks from the date of the notice, request An Coimisiún Pleanála to make a screening determination in respect of the proposed development as to whether it would be likely to have significant effects on the environment. Such a submission should be addressed to the Secretary, An Coimisiún Pleanála, 64 Marlborough Street, Dublin 1.

Limerick City and County Council in accordance with the requirements of Article 250(1) of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (as amended) has carried out an Appropriate Assessment (AA) Screening and has determined that a full Appropriate Assessment is not required in respect of the proposed development.

Plans and particulars of the proposed development will be available for inspection or purchase at a fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of making a copy from 04/09/2026 up to and including 02/10/2026 at:

  • Customer Services Desk, Limerick City & County Council, Merchant's Quay, Limerick, V94 EH90, between 9:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays)
  • The Development Management Department, Limerick City & County Council Offices, Dooradoyle Road, Limerick, V94 WV78 between 9:00a.m. – 4:00p.m. Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays)

Plans and particulars of the proposed development will be available for inspection online during the above time-frames at https://planning.localgov.ie.

Submissions and observations in relation to the proposed development, dealing with proper planning and sustainable development of the area in which the development would be situated may be made:

Submissions must be received on or before 4pm on the 16/10/2026.
