Limerick City and County Council has expressed its deep sadness at the passing of former Councillor and Cathaoirleach Michael O'Kelly, Abbeyfeale, whose long and distinguished record of public service spanned more than 25 years and left a lasting impact on his community and County Limerick.

A respected teacher and community representative from Killarney Road, Abbeyfeale, Michael O'Kelly was first elected to Limerick County Council in 1979. He successfully retained his seat in 1985, 1991 and 1999, serving the people of West Limerick with dedication and commitment until his retirement from public life in 2004. He served as Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council from 1999 to 2000.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, paid tribute to Mr O'Kelly's contribution to public life, saying:

"Michael O'Kelly devoted much of his life to serving the people of Abbeyfeale and West Limerick. His commitment to public service, his deep understanding of his community and his dedication to improving the lives of others earned him the respect of colleagues and constituents alike. On behalf of the people of Limerick, I extend my sincere condolences to Michael's family, friends and former colleagues."

Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr. Tom Ruddle, added:

"Michael O'Kelly exemplified the very best of public service. Over many years he worked tirelessly on behalf of the people he represented and earned widespread respect across the council chamber and throughout his community. His commitment, integrity and dedication to local government leave a lasting legacy. On behalf of the elected members of Limerick City and County Council, I extend my sincere sympathies to his family and friends."

Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly, said:

"Michael O'Kelly made a significant contribution to local government over a period spanning more than two decades. His leadership as Cathaoirleach and his commitment to representing his constituents left a lasting mark on County Limerick. We remember him with gratitude and extend our sympathies to all who mourn his passing."

Michael O'Kelly was also part of a family with a proud tradition of public service. He was a first cousin of former councillors Gerard Collins and Michael J. Collins and a nephew of the late James J. Collins, who served as a councillor from 1950 to 1967.

Michael will repose at Harnett's Funeral Home, The Square, Abbeyfeale (V94 AK44) on Monday, 17 August, from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at The Church of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale, on Tuesday, 18 August, at 11.00am, followed by interment in Reilig Íde Naofa, Abbeyfeale. The Requiem Mass will be live streamed. Family flowers only. Donations, if desired, to a charity of choice.
