Limerick City and County Council has signed the construction contract with M Fitzgibbon Contractors Ltd for a new social housing development at Barnakyle, Patrickswell, Co. Limerick.

The €8.263 million development, funded under the Social Housing Investment Programme (SHIP), will deliver 24 high-quality homes following approval through the Part 8 planning process. The scheme comprises a mix of single storey, dormer and two-storey units, including 8 two-bedroom homes, 11 three-bedroom homes and 5 four-bedroom homes, designed to meet a range of housing needs in the area.

In addition to the residential units, the development will include new roads connecting to Clarina Road and future neighbouring developments, along with footpaths and car parking. Works will also provide for hard and soft landscaping, including boundary treatments, garden walls, planting and street lighting, as well as key infrastructure such as water mains, drainage systems and utility connections.

Construction is expected to commence shortly, with completion anticipated in Q4 2027.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran said:

“This investment of over €8 million represents a very positive step in addressing housing needs in Patrickswell. The Barnakyle homes will offer high‑quality, modern accommodation for families and individuals, helping to strengthen the community. Together with the Council’s recent acquisition of lands in the area, the Barnakyle development demonstrates a co‑ordinated, forward‑looking approach to meeting both current and future housing needs in this growing community.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery commented:

“This is a very welcome development for Patrickswell and the surrounding area. There is clear demand for housing locally and these 24 new homes will make real difference to families and individuals waiting for suitable accommodation. This investment will ensure that people can continue to live and thrive in this growing community.”

Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly, added:

“The delivery of 24 new social homes at Barnakyle reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment under the Social Housing Investment Programme to increase housing supply and meet identified need. This development demonstrates our focus on delivering well-designed homes, supported by appropriate infrastructure, in established communities.”
