New Limerick City and County Council Website to Record Newly Planted Trees Takes Root in Limerick

  • New Limerick City and County Council Website to Record Newly Planted Trees

Limerick City and County Council has launched a new online platform - Trees.Limerick.ie - which allows all new tree planting across Limerick city and county to be recorded.

The website invites any individual, group, business or community to register all tree planting across the city and county. By enabling people to record where and when trees are planted, Trees.Limerick.ie will help track progress, celebrate local action and support informed planning for climate action, biodiversity protection and sustainable development.

Everyone is encouraged to take part by recording newly planted trees - whether marking a special occasion, contributing to a community project or supporting a more sustainable future.

Planting the Seeds of Sustainability

Limerick City and County Council promotes tree planting as a key measure to strengthen communities, build environmental sustainability and increase climate resilience. These efforts support wider local and national policy objectives, including Ireland’s climate and biodiversity strategies and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Trees.Limerick.ie is strongly supported by the Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, who has set out a clear ambition in the Limerick Mayoral Programme 2024 - 2029 seeking to reach a target of at least one tree to be planted for every citizen in Limerick.

Mayor Moran commented:

“This online platform is another practical way to show the importance we are placing in the ‘greening’ of Limerick. This new platform will allow each and every tree planted in our county to be recorded and protected into the future. My ambition to plant at least one tree for every citizen of Limerick during my mayoral term is well known. While it’s an ambitious target, I believe it’s the right one to improve our air quality, our biodiversity and our wellbeing. I encourage everyone in Limerick to support this initiative. Every community, school, farm, business and individual can help us grow a more liveable, more healthy Limerick.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery, said:

“Planting trees really is one of the best investments we all can make in our communities. They make our neighbourhoods more attractive, improve the air around us, provide habitats for wildlife and just simply make places nicer to live in or spend time in. Trees.limerick.ie is a fantastic platform, allowing people to see how, together, even small actions of planting a single tree can add up to something meaningful for our city and county.”

Dr. Pat Daly, Director General, Limerick City and County Council, added:

“Every tree planted in Limerick matters. This new website provides a simple but powerful way for people to record their actions and help to capture the full picture of tree planting activity across the county. It will help to measure progress, and support climate and biodiversity planning.”

Growing a More Resilient Limerick

Trees are vital to life on Earth.

  • Trees help regulate the climate and maintain ecological balance.
  • They purify air and water, improving overall environmental quality.
  • Their roots help prevent soil erosion and stabilise the landscape.
  • Trees intercept rainfall and return moisture to the atmosphere through transpiration, which can influence local rainfall patterns.
  • They provide essential food and shelter for a huge range of species — from fungi and insects to birds and mammals.

Beyond their ecological importance, trees deliver significant social, psychological and environmental benefits. They help cool urban areas, reduce noise pollution, enhance wellbeing and contribute to healthier, greener places to live, work and enjoy.

Tree planting today is an investment in quality of life for current and future generations.

Together, we can plant a lasting legacy and create a greener, healthier Limerick for generations to come.
