Limerick City and County Council is launching a new Rightsizing Scheme at Clare Street, Limerick. The new Rightsizing home at Clare Street is a one-bed ground floor unit with a floor area of 53.8m². The home is set in a well-established and well-serviced area with plenty of amenities nearby. The home has a private rear terrace. The overall scheme consists of 7 new homes with 1 available for rightsizing.

The register launch is focused on private rightsizers over the age of 55, who own their own homes, and who find their dwelling too large for their needs. Under the scheme, a successful applicant must sell their home on the private market in return for a lifelong tenancy. The successful applicants will pay a 25% financial contribution to Limerick City and County Council.

The Rightsizing scheme is entirely voluntary.

Homes will be available in January 2026.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran commented:

“This signals steady progress and that our Rightsizing Scheme in Limerick City and County Council is working well, it being the tenth scheme delivered as a local authority. We are continuing to enable downsizing with dignity while freeing up family homes. In broad terms, housing difficulties are being addressed through practical delivery across Limerick, with momentum building that will continue.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir at Limerick City and County Council, Cllr. Catherine Slattery, commented:

“I greatly welcome this tenth rightsizing scheme announced by Limerick City and County Council. Rightsizing isn’t just about finding smaller homes—it’s a strategic solution that unlocks larger family properties for urgent needs, maximises the efficiency of our housing resources, and ensures a sustainable, community-focused future.”

Director General at Limerick City and County Council, Dr. Pat Daly, added:

“This Rightsizing Scheme represents a forward-thinking approach to housing in Limerick. By creating opportunities for people over 55 to move into modern, well-located homes that better suit their needs, we are not only improving quality of life but also freeing up larger properties for families who need them. It’s a voluntary, community-focused initiative that ensures our housing stock is used efficiently and sustainably, while supporting residents to remain in vibrant, well-serviced areas.”

The closing date for receipt of applications from eligible candidates over the age of 55 is 5pm Wednesday 14th January 2026.

Candidates who submit a full application with supporting documentation will be assessed to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements. Limerick City and County Council will hold a panel of approved candidates in excess of the number of available properties in case a selected candidate’s circumstances change, and they are unable to accept the offer.
