Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) continues to demonstrate its commitment to excellence in public green spaces, with multiple local parks recognised in the prestigious 2025 Green Flag Awards, announced by An Taisce – The National Trust for Ireland.
This year marks a special milestone for Mungret Park, which has received its first ever Green Flag Award. This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of the Parks Department at Limerick City and County Council, whose efforts ensure that our green spaces remain vibrant, accessible, and environmentally responsible.
Officially opened in 2016, Mungret Park is a 25-acre amenity offering scenic walking and cycling trails, an inclusive playground, dog park and outdoor fitness facilities for all ages in view of the historic Mungret College.
In addition to Mungret Park, Adare Town Park retained the Green Flag status it first achieved in 2024, and The People’s Park continues to uphold its standard of excellence, maintaining its Green Flag.
Limerick also celebrates success in the Green Heritage Site Accreditation, with Lough Gur Lakeshore Park and Visitor Centre recognised for its unique historical and cultural significance.
Green Abbeyfeale
Páirc Cois Féile / Abbeyfeale Town Park under the stewardship of Abbeyfeale Community Leisure Ltd is another Green Flag winner in Limerick and the Green Flag Community Award has been awarded to Abbeyfeale Biodiversity Park, managed by Abbeyfeale Community Council and Abbeyfeale Tidy Towns.
These awards highlight the incredible contribution of local volunteers and community groups in maintaining and enhancing our shared spaces.
Speaking about the awards, Carmel Lynch, Snr Executive Engineer, Environment and Climate Action at Limerick City and County Council, said:
“We are thrilled to see Mungret Park achieve its first Green Flag Award while The People’s Park, Adare Park and Lough Gur continue to stand out as leading examples of quality public parks. This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, sustainable green spaces for everyone in Limerick. We also extend our congratulations to the Abbeyfeale organisations whose dedication and community spirit have earned them well-deserved recognition.”
