Limerick City and County Council proudly salutes one of Limerick’s greatest sporting icons, Declan Hannon. A true champion, an inspirational leader, and a hurling legend.

Declan’s retirement from inter-county hurling marks the close of an extraordinary chapter, not only in the sport but in the story of Limerick itself. As captain, he guided our senior hurlers through an era of unprecedented success, securing five All-Ireland titles and seven Munster championships.

We will forever cherish the breakthrough moment in 2018, when Declan led Limerick to end a 45-year wait for the Liam MacCarthy Cup. He etched his name in history by becoming the first hurling captain to lift the Cup on four occasions, a feat that will stand as a benchmark for generations to come.

The joy of those All-Ireland homecomings, the packed streets, the sea of green and white, and the shared celebrations created lasting memories and inspired young and old across the county.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran commented:

“On behalf of the people of Limerick, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks and admiration to Declan Hannon on his retirement from inter-county hurling. Declan’s contribution to Limerick hurling and to our county as a whole has been truly extraordinary. For fifteen years, Declan has represented Limerick with distinction, class and heart. His leadership both on and off the field will forever be part of our county’s story. I thank Declan and his family, who shared and supported him on the journey with him for all he has given. We look forward to celebrating his legacy for many years to come.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery paid this tribute:

“Declan Hannon has been a role model in every sense: for young players taking up the hurley in towns and villages, for teammates learning what leadership means, and for a community that has drawn so much pride and identity from its hurling heroes. Declan’s legacy is not just in medals and trophies, but in the pride he instilled in Limerick people and the example he set for future generations.”

Dr. Pat Daly, Director General, Limerick City and County Council added:

“Declan Hannon has given outstanding service to his county, not only through his achievements on the pitch but through the values he consistently embodied, determination, loyalty, pride of place, teamwork, and selflessness. He has been a powerful ambassador for Limerick, representing us with dignity and distinction on the national stage. His leadership lifted the spirits of the county, uniting communities and inspiring belief in what we can achieve together.”

Go raibh míle maith agat, Declan.
