New Digital Map to Provide Interactive Information Source for Current and Future Walking, Wheeling, and Cycling Projects in Limerick

  • Active Travel interactive map

A new digital map providing an interactive information source for the public on current and future walking, wheeling and cycling projects in Limerick has been launched on Limerick.ie.

The resource will show colour coordinated, categorised projects that have been delivered and are being worked on by the multi-disciplinary Active Travel team in Limerick City & County Council, based in Barrow House on Michael St.

For the first time, all cycle lanes in Limerick have been mapped and are now available for the public to view. These consist of 104km approx. in the city and 41km approx. in the county.

All works in progress and works that have been approved to proceed via statutory planning processes have been included, with it now possible to see the Active Travel network’s continued development in one place.

These projects are being fully funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA), which has allocated Limerick City & County Council €20.5 million to spend on walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure in 2025.

The new Active Travel digital map will show the following across Limerick city and county:

  • Progress of the rollout of enhanced pedestrian infrastructure under Active Travel funding across both Limerick city and county
  • Progress of Limerick’s cycle network (specifying built, under construction and future cycleways)
  • Progress of the rollout of the Safe Routes to School programme (specifying completed and upcoming works)
  • Completed faciltiies under the Bus Shelters Enabling Works Programme
  • Locations of nitrogen dioxide monitoring tubes in areas being monitored by the Active Travel team
  • Available bike parking facilities throughout Limerick city and county

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, commented:

“I am committed to delivering more information about the projects we have in the pipeline and how we are doing at delivering on them.  Today is an important step forward towards that greater transparency led by our Active Travel team.  It is available on Limerick.ie which continues to be a cornerstone of how we communicate with our local community. It provides information not only to the people of Limerick, but visitors to our city and county also.

The Mayoral programme has big ambition for more sustainable and accessible transport options, but also many more projects. Information about what we want to deliver and what we have delivered goes hand-in-hand with better accountability.  It also helps to get people more and more involved in decisions about how their community develops.  Finally, explaining where we are going and how we are doing is key to attracting the necessary investment we need to build a great city-region which matches our ambition.  My congrats to the team who have delivered this new portal of information.”

The map will be continuously updated with other elements of the Active Travel team’s work into the future.

The intent is to share the map’s information with OpenStreetMap and Google Maps, in order for members of the public to be able to use existing tools for accurate cycle and pedestrian journey planning.

Príomh Comhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Dan McSweeney, added:

“Ensuring timely, accurate and accessible information is available to the people of Limerick to inform their transport choices is incredibly important. Those living, working and visiting any part of the city or county can now see, through this exciting resource on Limerick.ie, how these improved facilities can positively impact their journeys and allow them to make more sustainable transport choices where possible.”

Senior Engineer with the Active Travel department in Limerick City & County Council, Sean McGlynn, said:

“The Active Travel team has been continuing to develop and improve our communications output since the department was set up in 2021. This digital map is the latest stage in that, with the project set to be a moving feast. Further projects will be added as the implementation of the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (LSMATS) progresses.

Allowing people to see all the existing cycle routes for the first time will open opportunities for more sustainable transport options, enabling people who want to make that choice to cycle for work, social or leisure reasons a real possibility. We look forward to continuing our work in 2025 and beyond, with consistent updates being provided through our digital map and elsewhere on Limerick.ie.”

The online offering is a collaborative initiative that has involved the Active Travel team working hand-in-hand with Limerick City & County Council’s Marketing & Communications department.

The digital map will sit within the current Active Travel information offering on Limerick.ie, which was expanded in 2024 to include a landing page for each individual project being worked on by the team.
