Limerick Museum is going on the road to help spread the message about the wonderful new home for the country’s old local authority museum and to see if some historic gems are lurking in people’s homes, attics or garages.
Over the next six weeks, Limerick Museum in association with Creative Ireland, will be popping up in towns and villages throughout Limerick County.
A pop-up museum is created by the public and is accomplished by the public bringing along their historic objects relating to their community, including but not limited to old postcards, photographs or from local sporting events or businesses.
Each item will require a label that will describe what the item means to the owner, the Limerick Museum staff will assist in writing this label. The object is then put on display for a short period to allow other members of the public to view the object and discover more about their locality.
Those who wish to participate can stay for five minutes or an hour, as long as you would like. All objects will be returned to their owners at the end of the session.
The purpose is to engage people of all ages and walks of life in a reflection and conversation about the meaning of objects in our lives and histories.
The pop-up museums will take place between 11am and 4pm on the particular day and will be created in collaboration with local residents across County Limerick.

- Murroe - 21 October - Murroe Community Hall
- Askeaton - 28 October - Askeaton Community Centre
- Kilmallock - 4 November - Kilmallock Pastoral Centre
- Abbeyfeale - 11 November - Leens Hotel
- Newcastle West - 18 November - Newcastle West Community Centre
Curator of Limerick Museum Dr Matthew Potter said: “We’ve had a fantastic response to opening of the permanent home of Limerick Museum in the Old Franciscan Friary on Henry Street, Limerick, with visitor numbers increasing and a burgeoning interest in the history of Limerick.”
“This new venture for us, the Pop-Up Museum will see us travel the length and breadth of the county to see what historic gems are hiding in plain sight.”

Award winning historian and owner of Limerick’s Life website Sharon Slater said “This is a great opportunity for people in their local community to explore their own history. Sometimes the stories behind the items are a lot more fascinating than the items themselves and we want to capture that during our tour.”
