As Halloween approaches, the public is being urged to avoid participating in bonfires and using fireworks, which pose serious risks to human health, pets, property, and the environment. Both activities are illegal and can lead to severe consequences.

The uncontrolled burning of waste in bonfires releases toxic pollutants into the air, harming both health and the environment. Fireworks, which are also illegal, can cause injuries, frighten pets, and damage property.

Limerick Fire and Rescue Service and the Environment and Climate Action department at Limerick City and County Council are urging households and businesses not to supply any waste material to individuals without a valid waste collection permit.

Bonfires are often built close to houses and other properties, presenting serious risks. Acting Chief Fire Officer, Limerick Fire and Rescue Service, Paul McMahon, explains:

“Halloween is one of the busiest times of the year for fire services. Responding to bonfire and firework call-outs strains our resources. People need to be aware of the fire safety hazards from illegal bonfires and fireworks, where burning highly combustible materials or mishandling fireworks can lead to serious injuries or death. I appeal to people to respect the role of firefighters and allow them to perform their duties safely. Fireworks, in particular, can be very dangerous and unpredictable, adding to the risks we face.”

Environmental Awareness Officer at Limerick City and County Council, Helen Kenneally, advised:

“The illegal burning of bonfires on Halloween is often used by some to dispose of waste material illegally. This practice is prohibited under the Air Pollution Act, 1987, and the Waste Management Act, 1996 (as amended). Such bonfires and the use of fireworks pose significant risks, including legal repercussions, adverse effects on the local community, and negative impacts on the environment.”

Tips for a Safe Halloween 2024:

  • Do not provide materials for bonfires.
  • Report hoarding of materials such as pallets, tyres, and old furniture to Limerick City and County Council’s Customer Services at 061 556000.
  • Keep your pets indoors.
  • Do not leave dangerous substances lying around that may be taken for a bonfire; items such as petrol, white spirits, diesel, aerosols, batteries, tins of paint, bottles, and tyres are dangerous and toxic if set on fire.
  • Do not facilitate illegal bonfires or firework displays on or near your home or property. Explain the dangers to children and teenagers.
  • Contact the Fire Service or Limerick City and County Council’s Customer Services at 061 556000 if you see a bonfire being lit close to buildings, trees, overhead cables, underground services, or car parking areas.
  • Stay a safe distance from bonfires and fireworks - wind can carry sparks long distances and cause permanent injuries and scars.
  • Remember, Halloween night can be dangerous; children should not be out unaccompanied.
  • Do not buy, use, or supply fireworks - they are illegal.
  • Respect the Emergency Services, Council Staff, and the Gardaí in doing their jobs.
