A historic village situated on the banks of the River Shannon, Castleconnell has a strong history of community development and a vibrant local voluntary sector.
ACM Community Group
ACM Community Development Society was established as the Millennium Project Group in 1998 by the Castleconnell Community Development Council (CCDC) and immediately set about the task of developing a Community Centre in the parish. The existing building at 14-15 Castle Street, Castleconnell was purchased in 2001 and was subsequently refurbished. ACM is now home to many community activities, to name a few, a community childcare facility which runs pre school and after school services, an active social group, historical society, festivals and a youth club.
LOVE Castleconnell is an initiative and brand set up by the local community with the aim of promoting and preserving the character of the village. It provides an umbrella organisation for both residents and businesses to promote the rich architectural, cultural, fishing and sporting heritage of the area.
Castleconnell has a dedicated group of volunteers whose passion and love for the upkeep of their community helps to make Castleconnell an increasingly pleasant place to live, work and visit. Castleconnell Tidy Towns projects and initiatives undertaken in recent years include a community garden, an annual tree lighting event in December, bee monitoring workshops, the annual pumpkin competition, an enhanced picnic area at the playground, dog fouling signs at problem locations in the village, 160th anniversary of the opening of Castleconnell Railway Station in partnership with local group LOVE Castleconnell, successful participation in the Limerick’s Going for Gold award competition, as well as ongoing preparation and upkeep of summer flower beds and litter picks for An Taisce clean up and TLC on Good Friday every year.
Located at the side of the Parish Hall, this pleasant space, planted with a range of sensory plants and suitable for wheelchair users, is cared for by Castleconnell Tidy Towns and Castleconnell Community Employment Scheme.
Castleconnell has a long and distinguished history in organised sport, winning countless cups and trophies by boys and girls of all ages down through the decades.
