Board of Guardians Minute Books (1848 - 1922). Meetings were held weekly. Entries are recorded under headings, which include Clerk’s reports, Treasurer’s Account, Reports of the Master and Other Officers and Orders of and Letters from the Poor Law Commissioners. Also recorded are members present, details of correspondence, proposals and resolutions passed, and payments made. Also noted in each volume is information provided by the census on population of the Union in each decade.

Biographical / Historical Note
Newcastle West Union was declared in December 1838 and covered an area of just over 207 square miles. A new workhouse, with accommodation for 550, was in operation from Mach, 1841. While the formation of the Croom Union lessened the area of the Union, the number of the electoral divisions was greatly increased in 1850

Minute Books of the Board of Guardians of NewCastle West Union. Meetings were held weekly. Entries are recorded under headings, which include Clerk’s reports, Treasurer’s Account, Reports of the Master and Other Officers and Orders of and Letters from the Poor Law Commissioners. Also recorded are members present, details of correspondence, proposals and resolutions passed, and payments made. Also noted in each volume is information provided by the census on population of the Union in each decade.
Volumes include tables titled ‘Return of Destitute Persons relieved out of the Workhouse, as by Relief Lists, for the last week ending (date) authenticated and laid before the Board of Guardians at this meeting’.
Also included is additional table titled ‘State of the Workhouse for the week ending (date)’. This table records the number of inmates for which accommodation is provided in Workhouse/Temporary Buildings/Additional Workhouses/Permanent Fever Hospital/Fever Sheds/Total; the number of inmates in categories such as ‘aged and infirm’, (male/female); able-bodied (male/female), boys and girls and children under 2 years/born (male/female); and Return of Sick and Lunatics: Number in Hospital , Number of Lunatics and Idiots in Workhouse on the above date.
Also recorded are numbers admitted during the week, numbers discharged during the week, number died during week, and total remaining at end of week. Also noted in each volume is information provided by the census on population of the Union in each decade.
