Limerick Soviet Exhibition

Limerick Soviet

The Limerick Soviet was a general strike held in protest against the imposition of martial law in the city by the British authorities in 1919. For a fortnight (14-26 April, 2019) the Soviet governed Limerick City. The strike was the first of its kind in Ireland, and to mark the centenary of the event, Limerick Museum partnered with the Limerick Council of Trade Unions to create an exhibition that paid respect to the people involved.

The exhibition ran from March 2019 to June 2019. You can find the panels from the exhibition here

Limerick’s lace-making industry was one of the city’s most famous exports. The history of Limerick Lace is important to us as it represents an international brand, but also because many families treated pieces of Limerick Lace as family treasures. Watch ‘A History of Limerick Lace’ featured on RTÉ’s Nationwide in 2019.
