The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick has expressed his condolences and those of the people of Limerick to the family of former County Manager Sean Murphy.
Mayor Daniel Butler said: “On behalf of myself, the staff and former staff of Limerick City and County Council and the people of Limerick, I would like to offer my sympathies to Sean’s family and friends on his passing, especially to his wife Muiread, daughter Catherine and sons John, Declan and Alan.
“Sean was a gentleman who worked tirelessly for the people of County Limerick. He may have retired from the organisation in 1992 but there are still people working with us who remember him as a quiet but determined man, a man of great character and integrity.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
Sean joined Limerick County Council in September 1966 and was appointed to the post of Chief Assistant County Engineer Main Roads, a post he held for almost nine years.
During that time he oversaw several projects including the N8 at Kilbehenny, N69 Foynes-Glin, N21 Newcastle West to Abbeyfeale and the Plassey Park Road development.
Following this he spent a short period as Chief Assistant, Sanitary Services before being appointed Assistant County Manager in 1976.
In 1988 he became County Manager until he left the Council in 1992. During this time he was instrumental in establishing the Roads Design Team, an organisational review by the Institute of Public Administration and a consultative forum for staff.
He worked at various engineering grades in Dublin Corporation, Tipperary (North) County Council, Waterford Corporation, Dun Laoghaire Corporation between 1952 and his arrival in Limerick County Council in 1976.
