Organist Anne Cullen will give a 30 minute recital on the 1864 pipe organ in St John's Cathedral.
The programme will span the centuries, featuring music from 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries by Buxtehude, Bach, Franck and Langlais. The breadth of this repertoire will demonstrate the wonderful variety of sounds available on this 46 stop instrument, which has in excess of 2,500 pipes.
The pipe organ is truly the King of Instruments, as described by Mozart and it is said that Franck likened playing the organ to playing an orchestra. Anne will take us on a journey, not just through the centuries, but through the very broad range of styles and sounds at her fingertips.
This organ was built by the renowned firm of Wm. Hill and Son and was a gift to the cathedral from the 3rd Earl of Dunraven, Edward Wyndham Quinn of Adare.
It cost £1,000 at the time but is worth in excess of EUR 1,000.000 today. A recital such as this allows us to appreciate the extent of this gift, while also reminding us of the need to preserve this wonderful highly regarded legacy into the future.
