A major new initiative aimed at helping people of all ages become more active, connected and healthier has officially been launched in Kilmallock.
The Kilmallock Community Sports Hub was officially launched at a special Community Connections event in the People's Hall on Wednesday, 17 June, bringing together local residents, community organisations and service providers to celebrate a shared commitment to health, inclusion and community wellbeing.
The launch, held during Men's Health Week, marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Kilmallock, with the Sports Hub set to deliver a wide range of physical activity programmes, community events and inclusive opportunities over the coming years.
The initiative is delivered through a partnership between Ballyhoura Development and Limerick Sports Partnership, with support from the Dormant Accounts Fund, and is designed to make it easier for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to become more physically active while building stronger community connections.
Throughout the morning, visitors enjoyed interactive activities led by Limerick Sports Partnership, healthy food demonstrations prepared by Ballyhoura Development's Nadia Atalla and Eileen McCabe through the Community Food Initiative, free health checks provided by the HSE, and information stands from a range of organisations including Foróige Kilmallock, Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, Kilmallock Library, South Limerick Community Healthcare and the HSE.
The event also highlighted a number of Ballyhoura Development initiatives supporting local communities, including WorkAbility, MAP (Migrant Apprenticeship Pathways), the East Limerick Traveller Programme, Farm Forward and the North Cork Rural Community Health Programme.
Launching the Hub, Hugh Guest, Community Sports Development Officer with Ballyhoura Development, said:
"I'm thrilled with the engagement we saw from the community at the People's Hall for our Community Connections event. It showcased the new Sports Hub's commitment to promoting wellbeing, inclusivity and connection in the Kilmallock area. I'm hugely looking forward to the next few months as we get the Hub up and running, providing an important service to the community."
Phelim Macken, Manager of Limerick Sports Partnership, welcomed the launch and highlighted the long-term commitment behind the initiative.
"Limerick Sports Partnership is delighted to establish our fourth Sports Hub across Limerick in the Kilmallock area. The Sports Hub concept is based on a five-year commitment of funding, both current and capital, to enhance existing facilities and provide opportunities for everyone to be physically active. We are delighted to appoint Hugh as our Sports Officer, in collaboration with Ballyhoura Development, to lead the Sports Hub initiatives."
A highlight of the morning was an inspiring keynote address by Dessie Fitzgerald, who spoke openly about resilience, wellbeing and the importance of community.
"Some of the most important things that helped me rebuild my own life were connection, support and a sense of community. That's why initiatives like the Kilmallock Community Sports Hub are so important. Communities aren't built by buildings—they are built by people who choose to connect, support one another and get involved. This Hub creates opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate, build relationships and realise they don't have to face life's challenges alone."
The Kilmallock Community Sports Hub aims to create lasting opportunities for people to get involved in sport and physical activity, reduce social isolation and strengthen community wellbeing through local partnerships and inclusive programming.
Activities will begin throughout the summer, with community members encouraged to get involved and help shape future programmes.
One of the first regular activities is the Kilmallock Walking Group, which meets every Wednesday at 11.00am outside Kilmallock Library for a relaxed, self-paced 5km walk. The walk is open to everyone, with tea, coffee and refreshments provided afterwards by Kilmallock Library.
Residents are also encouraged to join the Kilmallock Community Sports Hub WhatsApp Community to hear about upcoming activities, share ideas and help shape future programmes.
