Ed Lyne, resident archaeologist with Limerick City and County Council, explores the recent archaeological works on the Foynes/Limerick road.

his road project is 35km in length and will shortly provide a motorway upgrade from Attyflin to Rathkeale, in addition to connecting the port of Foynes to the motorway network. An extenisve archaeological survey and where necessary excavations, were carried out as part of the project. There have been many interesting finds and discoveries. Ed Lyne, resident archaeologist with Limerick City and County Council will explain the project, one of the largest in the state in recent years, and go through what was found and how it has helped reshape our understanding of the history of Limerick. This is a story which spans thousands of years. An opportunity to get first-hand insight into large scale and modern archaeoloigcal practices.
