The Hare’s Corner Biodiversity Initiative

The Hare’s Corner biodiversity initiative is set to launch in Limerick City and County in early 2026, offering landowners a unique opportunity to create wildlife-friendly spaces with free, hassle-free support.

Coordinated by Burrenbeo Trust in partnership with Limerick City and County Council’s Biodiversity Officer, the project aims to help landowners establish habitats that benefit biodiversity, climate action, and community wellbeing.

Inspired by the old farming term “The Hare’s Corner” - a patch of land left for nature - the initiative provides practical assistance for simple but impactful actions, including:

  • Wildlife ponds
  • Native mini-woodlands
  • Heritage mini-orchards
  • Wildlife hedges
  • Or a bespoke ‘Plan for Nature’

Support comes in the form of materials (native trees, heritage apple trees), micro-funding (e.g. pond digging costs), and expert advice and guidance. Participation is free, with minimal hassle for landowners - just a commitment to act as stewards of their own Hare’s Corner.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for landowners in Limerick to make a real difference for biodiversity and climate action,” said Sinead McDonnell, Biodiversity Officer for Limerick City and County Council.

“Even small spaces can have a big impact, and we’re here to make it as easy as possible for people to create habitats that benefit wildlife and communities alike.”
