Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) is inviting members of the public to participate in a non-statutory public consultation regarding the proposed Market Quarter and Cruises Street Public Realm Upgrade project.

LCCC’s vision for the project is to improve and enhance the existing streets and public spaces in the Market Quarter area in order to revitalise the area and make the Market Quarter, the Milk Market and Cruises Street in particular, key locations within the city and region for both locals and tourists alike.

LCCC’s objectives for the project are to:

  • Position the Market Quarter and the Milk Market in particular as a key location within the public realm for both locals and tourists;
  • Improve connectivity between O’Connell Street, Cruise’s Street, Arthur’s Quay, Opera Square and The Market Quarter;
  • Improve safety, accessibility, wayfinding and footfall in the area;
  • Increase cycling and pedestrian movement within the city centre;
  • Increase blue and green infrastructure in the city centre;
  • Increase commercial occupancy and economic growth; and
  • Improve liveability in the city and promote a strong sense of place.

The proposed project is being delivered by LCCC’s Place Making Department and is being funded by the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF) as well as the National Transport Authority (NTA).

A non-statutory public consultation period will begin from Thursday, 12th September 2024 and run for a four week period until Wednesday, 9th October 2024.  A public event is being held on the 24th September 2024 in the UL City Campus, Sarsfield Street Limerick, V94 DW21 from 1.00pm to 7.30pm.  This is to offer those who attend the chance to look at, and provide feedback on, preliminary drawings and a proposed potential layout for the project.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran is inviting members of the public to have their say on how the future of this heritage area should transform over the coming years:

“This is another of a very important set of public consultations which we are rolling out to inform the work of the 5-year Mayoral Programme.  This consultation follows on the one which is on-going on King’s Island and will be closely followed by the associated framework discussions for Arthur’s Quay area.  Together, they will help us formulate a fully up to date and integrated view of how these key areas in our city centre need to evolve.

"I encourage all citizens to participate in shaping the future of Limerick’s Market Quarter and Cruises Street. By contributing your ideas and feedback, you are playing a vital role in creating public spaces that enhance the attractiveness of our city centre and helping ensure that they work for all.

“We know that improved streets and public areas boost the city’s appeal for residents and visitors. But sometimes, knowing all of the concerns is hard.  That is why your feedback is essential.”

Director of Service with the Place Making Team at Limerick City and County Council, Vincent Murray, commented:  “This proposed public realm project represents a significant investment in the heart of our city, aimed at enhancing the vibrancy and accessibility of the Market Quarter and Cruises Street areas.

“The consultation process will provide an opportunity for local residents, businesses and stakeholders alike, to engage with and provide feedback on the proposed concepts.  We are committed to ensuring that the implementation of this public realm project reflects the needs and aspirations of all, and your input will play a crucial role in shaping the final design.”
