Inside The Farm Gate

Sunday 30th August @ 11am
  • Inside The Farmers Gate

The open day is an opportunity to discuss nature friendly farming measures.

Farm walks in the morning from 11:00 to 1:30 on the Western part of the farm followed by break for lunch at 1:30 with afternoon walk from 2:30 until 5pm along the Eastern part of the farm. A range of habitats can be seen. The morning walk takes in brackish lagoons on karstic bedrock where calcareous grassland intersects with saltmarsh and species rich grassland including limestone pavement and takes in the dairy as well as a bat house built under the NPWS Farm Plan scheme for Lesser Horseshoe bats to roost. The afternoon walk also takes in species rich grassland along with a tree plantation used for pollarding and otter holts also constructed as part of the NPWS Farm Plan Scheme as well as saltmarsh onto an isthmus jutting onto the Shannon estuary.

Refreshments will be served and a selection of vintage farm machinery will be on display. The open day is an opportunity to discuss nature friendly farming measures as well at the features on the site, ecological and archaeological as well as the breeds of livestock present, Droimeann, Kerry and Shorthorn cattle primarily as well as Galway, Cladoir, Shetland and Shropshire sheep. The farm is organic and much of the land is designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protected Area (SPA).
