Join us for a fascinating lecture by John Sheehan, retired lecturer in archaeology at University College Cork, as he explores the rich history and enduring significance of Skellig Michael: Pilgrimage and Penance.
John Sheehan served as Senior Lecturer in UCC’s Department of Archaeology until his recent retirement. His principal research was conducted on the Early Medieval and Viking Age periods and his most recent publication, The Book of The Skelligs (2022), co-edited with John Crowley, was nominated for An Post’s Book of the Year Award and Current Archaeology UK Project of the Year Award.
Skellig Michael, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is widely regarded as Europe’s most impressive island monastic settlement of the early medieval period. Its dramatic form and remote location marked it out as a place of both pilgrimage and penance, and this talk will explore this role using archaeological, historical and folklore sources.
