Songs of Ireland’s insurgencies were weaved into a special event last night as The Irish World Academy of Music and Dance and Limerick Museum and Archives delivered a memorable celebration for the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

‘Songs of Rebellion’ featured songs of rebellion and revolution from the 1798 insurrection to the 1916 Rising. Singers performed ballads from this period, while historians gave a unique insight into the context of the songs themselves at the event.

Said Róisín Ní Ghallóglaigh, researcher at Irish World Academy of Music and Dance: “Ireland has a rich repertoire of traditional song and Limerick has played no small part in contributing to that tradition. It also had a very significant role in the fight for freedom, with proud Limerick men Con Colbert and Edward Daly among the 16 leaders executed after the Rising.”

The evening featured performances from Muireann NicAmhlaoibh, Orfhlaith Ní Bhriain, John Lyons, Róisin Ní Gallóglaigh, and Austin Flourish and children from St Mary’s primary school with contributions from historians Tom Toomey, Maura Cronin, Ruan O’ Donnell and Liam Irwin.

Said Jacqui Hayes, Archivist at Limerick City and County Council: “I am delighted with the success of the night. It was great to see such a large turnout and all round appreciation of our songs and stories in such a wonderful setting.”
