Mother Macs Public House recognised among Ireland’s best for both Whiskey Bar and Traditional Bar.
Mother Macs Public House in Limerick City is celebrating another major national achievement after taking Silver in both the Whiskey Bar of the Year and Traditional Bar of the Year categories at the 2026 Bar of the Year Awards.
The double recognition marks another significant chapter for the Limerick pub celebrating 10 years in business and underlines the consistency of its reputation on the national stage.
For Mother Macs, the Whiskey Bar Silver represents a remarkable third consecutive year of national recognition in the category, reinforcing the pub’s position as one of Ireland’s leading destinations for whiskey.
With a collection of hundreds of Irish and international whiskeys, an increasingly strong programme of tastings and events, and the development of the Limerick Whiskey Experience, whiskey at Mother Macs has evolved far beyond what sits on the back bar. The focus is firmly on storytelling, education, provenance and giving customers the confidence to explore the category.
Equally significant is the Silver award for Traditional Bar of the Year, representing the second time in five years that Mother Macs has reached the national podium in the Traditional Bar category.
For owners Michael and James McMahon, the two awards complement each other.
“We are incredibly proud of both awards because, in many ways, they represent exactly what we want Mother Macs to be. We love whiskey and we have invested enormously in developing that side of the business, but at our heart we are still a traditional Limerick pub. A place where people come through the door, pull up a stool, have a conversation and feel welcome.”
The recognition comes as Mother Macs continues to invest in both the traditions and the future of the Irish pub. Alongside its extensive whiskey offering, the pub has placed an increasing emphasis on staff education, Irish drinks, independent producers, cultural events and experiences that encourage visitors to spend more time discovering Limerick.
The awards also represent recognition for the wider Mother Macs team.
“These awards belong to our team as much as they belong to us. Great pubs aren't created by a collection of bottles or by the building alone. They are created by the people behind the counter and the people on the other side of it. Our staff genuinely care about what they do, and we are fortunate to have customers who continue to support us, challenge us and bring life to the pub every day.”
Mother Macs has increasingly sought to demonstrate that tradition and innovation do not have to be opposites. Its philosophy has been to protect the elements of the traditional Irish pub thatnmatter; conversation, hospitality, personality and community, while continually finding new reasons for people to visit and engage.
That approach has seen the business develop whiskey experiences, tastings, cultural programming and collaborations while retaining the character of the distinctive 1856 round-fronted pub at the heart of Limerick City.
The latest awards add to a growing list of national accolades for Mother Macs and provide further recognition not simply for the pub itself, but for the potential of hospitality businesses in Limerick City.
“We are very proud to bring two national awards home to Limerick. There is a huge amount happening in the city and some exceptional people working across hospitality, tourism and culture. Every time a Limerick business is recognised nationally, it gives us another opportunity to show people why they should come to the city and experience it for themselves.”
