From Limerick with Love – Major New Photographic Exhibition to be Unveiled in Shannon Airport

A major photographic exhibition entitled From Limerick with Love will be unveiled in Shannon Airport later this month.

A major photographic exhibition entitled From Limerick with Love will be unveiled in Shannon Airport later this month. The exhibition features some of the most evocative images of life in Limerick during the 1970s. The exhibition will also contain 69 images created by students of the Limerick School of Art and Design in response to the collection.

This year as Limerick takes its place as City of Culture, the Limerick Leader newspaper celebrates its 125th birthday. To mark both of these occasions, Limerick Museum and Archives (LM&A), the Limerick Leader newspaper and Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) are collaborating on this display which features over 180 images both archival and new works from the third year students of the Fine Art Department of LSAD. The exhibition will be shown in Shannon Airport from March until September when it will move into Limerick City.

“The Limerick Leader has been publishing the stories of Limerick continuously since 1889 and from the 1950's onwards the newspaper employed its own photographers and began amassing a large collection of photographic images,” explains Alan English, Limerick Leader Editor. “There are some fantastic images chronicling Limerick daily life and the major news stories that took place throughout the 1970s. We are delighted to share photographs of the people and places of Limerick with a wider audience including visitors to the Mid-West, our own nostalgic citizens and those who are just passing through Shannon Airport for the very first time during the busy Summer season.”

Limerick City Archivist, Jacqui Hayes said that Limerick Museum and Archives have been working behind the scenes for a number of months scanning and cataloging thousands of images from the Limerick Leader archives, starting with the 1970s. These images will be released through the LMA website www.limerick.ie/cityarchives and we will also share some teasers on its Twitter and Facebook pages.

“It's been a labour of love digitising this entire decade. Essentially this project will enable the general public to view these images from the Limerick Leader collection, which up until now have been saved in film negatives,” she said. “It's a very exciting project to be part of and we're looking forward to sharing these fantastic glimpses of local history and the creative responses of the students with visitors to our shores and to Limerick city later on in the Summer.”

From Limerick With Love will go on display firstly in the Departures Lounge of Shannon Airport from Tuesday, March 11th and return home to Limerick later in the year where it will be on display in both City Hall, Merchant's Quay and Limerick School of Art and Design.
