Limerick City and County Council is pleased to announce significant progress under the Bus Stop Enhancement Programme in 2025, funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA).

This programme is designed to improve accessibility and comfort for public transport users across the city and county. The NTA has allocated €500,000 in 2024 and again in 2025 to each Local Authority in Ireland to fund the enhancement of bus stop infrastructure within its administrative area

To date, new bus shelters and accessibility upgrades have been successfully completed at the following locations:

  • University of Limerick – civil works including a bus shelter, accessibility improvement works, road markings
  • University of Limerick Main Entrance – accessibility improvement works and road markings
  • Mulcair Road - a bus shelter, accessibility improvement works, road markings
  • Avonmore Road - accessibility improvement works and road markings
  • Ballyclough Avenue - accessibility improvement works and road markings
  • Hyde Avenue - accessibility improvement works and road markings
  • Kilbane, Golf Links Road - accessibility improvement works and road markings
  • Castletroy Shopping Centre - accessibility improvement works and road markings
  • Foynes – Flying Boat Museum - civil works including a bus shelter, accessibility improvement works, road markings
  • Foynes – Station House - civil works including a bus shelter and accessibility improvement works

Additional works at Dalys Cross, Castleconnell, Boher, Kildimo, and Holycross are scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

As part of this programme, works have included:

  • Installation of disability access kerbing for improved accessibility
  • Creation of concrete hard-standing areas
  • Upgraded road markings and paving
  • Installation of new bus stop poles and signage
  • Provision of bus shelters at key locations
  • Installation of retentions sockets for TFI poles on behalf of Bus Eireann and the Local Link.

While there has been a national delay in the supply of shelters due to the transition to a new national installer, Limerick City and County Council has continued to advance critical civil works at bus stops, such as accessibility improvements, upgrading signage and visibility, and preparing for future installations.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, said:

“The rollout of new bus shelters and accessibility upgrades again this year across Limerick has been another major success. These shelters and accessibility improvements works are a vital resource for communities as more people choose to use our ever improving bus services, especially in the county. With the number of users going up year on year, the pressure is on to keep upgrading our transport infrastructure at a pace and standard that sets a benchmark for other regions across the country.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Councillor Catherine Slattery, added:

"The Bus Stop Enhancement Programme is an example of high-quality infrastructure that directly benefits the people and shows what can be achieved when the Council and the NTA work together to deliver for our communities. These upgrades improve accessibility and comfort for passengers across Limerick, and we look forward to seeing even more projects like this rolled out in the years ahead."

Senior Engineer with the Active Travel department at Limerick City and County Council, Sean McGlynn,  commented:
"These improvements demonstrate our commitment to improving public transport infrastructure and accessibility for everyone. Even during a period of national supply constraints, we have kept momentum by completing essential groundwork and accessibility upgrades."
