The Bedford Townhouse & Café on Bedford Row, Limerick was officially opened on Thursday February 28th by the Mayor of Limerick City and County, Cllr  James Collins.

The opening took place at Bedford House, home to The Bedford Townhouse & Café and Limerick Travel – both of which are owned and operated by The Limerick Travel Group. The event was supported and attended by many members of local Limerick businesses, representatives from the city’s arts & culture community, local political supporters, and a number of parties directly involved with the development of The Bedford.

The Bedford project was launched back in November 2017 and has been a number of years in the making. The first phase of the project, The Bedford Café opened in July 2018 and this was followed by the stylish 12 bedrooms which were unveiled just before Christmas.

Continuing the family business tradition associated with Limerick Travel, Peter Brazil and his wife, Denise, have joined forces to make The Bedford a reality. Their vision was to create a boutique Limerick Townhouse - one that offers guests a central location to stay and eat in the stylish surroundings of an historic Limerick property. As a boutique property the personalised guest experience is at the heart of this vision.

Housed in a building that dates back to 1830, The Bedford showcases some of the original features of the building and its rich industrial heritage. Bedford House was once home to Peter Tait; founder of the Limerick Clothing Factory and former three-time Limerick Mayor.

The city of Limerick also plays a big part in The Bedford – and the Brazils have set themselves with the goal of ensuring that every guest that stays at The Bedford knows that they are staying in a Limerick property. With this in mind, all 12 guest rooms are named after Limerick landmarks including The Treaty Room, The Hunt Room and The Tait Suite. The history of Bedford Row has also been brought back to life through a Bedford Row Heritage Trail which is on display in the lower ground floor.

The residence feel of the Townhouse has been restored by local interior designer Tullio Orlandi and together with DNCF Building & Project Management, James Hartnett Architectural Consultants and PBC Builders; Bedford House has been transformed in to the stylish new Townhouse on display today. The 12 beautifully appointed Chic, Elegant and Suite guest rooms provide all modern amenities including air conditioning, smart TVs, large king beds with pocket sprung mattresses, and ensuites with power showers. The Bedford also goes a step further to provide some surprising features to enable guests to unwind and relax - The Parlour Room hideaway lounge area, a gym and steamroom, wellness breakfast in The Bedford Café and a rooftop garden - a little oasis in the city.

Denise Brazil, General Manager of The Bedford, MC’d the evening’s events and described the opening as “a celebration of two proud Limerick businesses that are part of one family in every sense”. In introducing Mayor James Collins she referenced how fitting it was for Mayor Collins to be opening The Bedford given the strong Limerick connection of both businesses.

Mayor Collins, in his address, described The Bedford as “spectacular” and “the type of property that is really needed in Limerick”. He went on to acknowledge the success of Limerick Travel who have been in business in Limerick since 1971 and who have advised, facilitated and supported many from the mid-west region in their travels around the globe. In the creation of The Bedford, Mayor Collins commented that “in this new chapter the Brazil family are now encouraging people from around the world to stay in a very spectacular accommodation here in the city centre of Limerick.”

Peter Brazil, Managing Director of the Limerick Travel Group, shared more about the background to The Bedford development and the history of Bedford House which has been maintained and promoted through this new business. He went on to pay tribute to all involved in the development and the staff of both businesses, who are the driving force behind its success. He also paid particular tribute to his parents Tony and Sheila Brazil. “Suffice to say that The Bedford would not have been possible without Limerick Travel and my parents Tony & Sheila Brazil; and we are all so proud to be starting a new chapter in the Limerick Travel Group with the opening of The Bedford."

The Bedford Townhouse & Café is now open for business. A social media campaign has just been launched this week to share more about the history of The Bedford and what lies beyond the front door of this beautiful Townhouse – readers can see more on The Bedford’s social media channels (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter).
