Exploring West Limerick appeals to the inquisitive and culturally curious - satisfy your curiosity by embarking on a journey along the 40km of safe, scenic, off-road Greenway. Throw some great gastronomy and exhilarating experiences into the mix and you’ve got one incredible adventure suitable for all ages.

Welcoming over 500,000 visits since it reopened in July last year following a €10 million investment by Limerick City and County Council, the success of Limerick Greenway lies in its heady mix of history, heritage and heart.

Here are your five reasons to visit Limerick Greenway:

1. Accessibility

First and foremost, Limerick Greenway’s surface was designed with accessibility and mobility in mind. Of course, the needs of cyclists, in terms of gradient and surface, was a key consideration at the design stage, but ultimately Limerick Greenway was designed to be enjoyed by everyone. The Greenway path is safe and suitable for users of all abilities and ages to explore; pedestrians, everyday journeys to work and school, wheelchair users, children in buggies and several different types of bicycles e.g. tandems, tag-alongs, toddler trailers, e-bikes etc.

2. History & Culture

Limerick’s culture has been heavily impacted by our city’s eventful history. King John’s Castle and the walls of Limerick were built by the Normans who captured the city in 1195. Not far from Limerick City, you will find one of the most important archaeological sites in Ireland, Lough Gur, which dates back more than 5,000 years. County Limerick offers so much history; from castles and medieval monuments to one of the country’s largest stone circles all located in some of Ireland’s most beautiful villages. From the Desmond Castle & Banqueting Hall in Newcastle West to the Irish Palatine Experience in Rathkeale, the Adare Heritage Centre and more, the West Limerick region is the perfect starting point for any culture vulture looking to reconnect and learn more about Ireland’s ancient past.

3. Retail

With its picture postcard main street of thatched cottages and medieval buildings, Adare is often referred to as one of Ireland’s prettiest villages. However, what a lot of people may not know is that it is also renowned for its retail offerings. The towns and villages in West Limerick offer a unique shopping experience in relaxed and friendly surroundings, with a choice of fashion boutiques, stocking exclusive brands from some of the world’s leading designers. Whether you have a passion for fashion or on the lookout for a special gift, there is a huge choice of quality shops boasting diverse artworks, ceramics and jewellery from Ireland’s own indigenous craft makers.

4. Sport

Limerick is rightly framed as a sporting stronghold in Ireland thanks to the support and passion of the local people. A recent historic All-Ireland hurling treble says it all really! Aside from traditional sports - such as Gaelic football and hurling, which Limerick is renowned for - the West Limerick region boasts a variety of sporting activities, with something for everyone to enjoy. From fishing along the River Feale, horse-riding in Abbeyfeale, golfing in Newcastle West or roller-blading along Limerick Greenway, there is something to keep all ages entertained.

5. The People

Last but certainly not least on our list of ‘5 Reasons to Visit Limerick Greenway’, must be the people. You may have other reasons to visit the West Limerick region, but the people will make you want to stay. Known for their welcoming and accommodating nature, it’s rare that you will complete the greenway route without having a friendly encounter with a stranger. You will meet some fascinating characters on your visit to West Limerick, and we guarantee that they will leave a lasting impression on you. West Limerick is a fabulous region and has a lot going for it, but the friendly faces and genuine charm of the area are what make a visit to Limerick Greenway so unique and unforgettable.
