  • Limerick boating

This Atlantic Area Interreg Project, which sits within Tourism Development, part of the Social Development Directorate, is bringing an added €105,000 to the Council.

The Blessing of the Boats Ceremony took place as part of Riverfest 2019. The blessing of the boats was formerly an annual ceremony for the local salmon fishing community. Unfortunately this ancient tradition had ceased by the late 1970’s. Now revived, it is hoped that the blessing of the boats will again become an annual tradition, celebrating the community spirit and culture of the local boating community.

Radharc na hAbhann in Saint Mary’s Cathedral also took place as part of Riverfest 2019. A free concert celebrating the beauty and power of the river in Limerick, with a focus on the deep connections between the local community and the River Shannon. It highlighted the natural and cultural heritage of the river at the heart of the city, while also recognising the people who make the river safer for the community.
