Limerick Museum has assembled a fine collection of objects relating to President Clinton’s 1998 visit, including a very colourful invitation to his public speech in Limerick city centre and an invitation folder containing a copy of the speech by Mayor Joe Harrington at the granting of freedom of city to President Clinton, signed by Mayor Harrington and the President using his full name of ‘William Jefferson Clinton.’
On 5th September 1998, approximately 40,000 people gathered in Limerick City to catch a glimpse of the 42nd President of the United States Bill Clinton and his wife Hilary Clinton. The couple arrived into Shannon airport on Air Force One, the evening before, and spent a night in Adare Manor.
At the public event on O’Connell Street, the President was granted the Freedom of the City by Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Joe Harrington.
