Limerick athletes Robert Sheahan and Trevor Lynch will proudly represent Ireland at the European Transplant Games in Arnhem, Netherlands, in June 2026.
Transplant Sport Ireland (TSI) is delighted to have athletes competing at the Games. TSI is the National Governing Body for Transplant Sport in Ireland and brings together transplant recipients, dialysis patients and living donors to participate in sport, fostering a community of resilience, inspiration and camaraderie.
Askeaton native Robert is the second of three brothers and comes from a close-knit family in West Limerick. Family has been at the centre of his journey and continues to be one of his greatest
sources of support.
Born with Cystic Fibrosis, Robert faced significant health challenges from an early age. In 2019, he became part of Irish medical history when he received the country's first simultaneous double lung and liver transplant. The ground-breaking surgery gave Robert a second chance at life and opened the door to opportunities that once seemed impossible.
Today, sport plays an important role in Robert's life and recovery. Competing with Transplant Sport Ireland allows him to celebrate the opportunities his transplant has given him while paying tribute to his donor and donor family. His message about organ donation is both simple and powerful.
"You have the power to positively change the trajectory of multiple people's lives."
Trevor received bone marrow transplants in 2014 and 2016. Originally from Cappamore, Co. Limerick, Trevor has lived in various parts of the world, including the USA and France, and now lives
in Buckinghamshire, England, with his wife Sue and their children, Aishling and Kieran. He was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2012 and underwent eight months of chemotherapy treatment.
When the cancer returned in 2013, he required a bone marrow transplant in 2014. Following a further relapse, a second bone marrow transplant was needed in 2016. By that stage, Trevor's health had deteriorated significantly, and even simple daily activities had become difficult.
However, the second transplant proved successful and within a year he had returned to running. Ten years later, Trevor continues to embrace every opportunity his second
chance at life has given him.
For Trevor, competing as a transplant athlete is about more than sport.
"Competing in the transplant games gives me motivation to remain fit all year round. In turn, being fit helps my mental and physical wellness. As an added bonus, Transplant Sport Ireland is such a wonderful team to be part of."
