Historical Note
As originally formed in December 1838, Rathkeale Union covered an area of 160 square miles and comprised the electoral division of:
Adare North Dunmoylan Kilscannel
Adare South Iveruss Loghill
Ardcanny Kilcornan Lismakeery
Askeaton Kilfinny Nantenan
Croagh Kilfergus Rathkeale
Croom Kilmoylan Shanagolden
Kildimo
Its workhouse was built for 660 people and was operative from July 1841.
Contributions to the formation of Glin and Croom Union in 1850 deprived the Union of some seven divisions. The remainder were redrawn as follows:
Askeaton East Dromard Rathkeale
Askeaton West Iveruss Riddlestown
Aughinish Kilcornan Dunmoylan East
Ballyallinan Kildimo Dunmoylan West
Ballynacarriga Kilscannell Loghill
Castletown Lismakeery Mohernagh
Craggs Nantinan Shanagolden
Croagh Pallaskenry Shanid
Unfortunately, the listing of the records of this Union is tragically simple; only one volume survived the fire started by the IRA in 1922.
