A voluntary agency working with families, single people and unaccompanied minors who are disadvantaged and socially excluded; primarily those who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.

Novas provides temporary and long term supported accommodation and social housing to people who are homeless. We also offer preventative services for families at risk of being homeless and respite care for the loved ones and families of people with addiction. McGarry House Homeless Accommodation

McGarry House in Limerick (formerly known as Bridgeland House) was opened in 2002 and became the country’s first low-threshold, direct access emergency facility. It has subsequently reduced the incidence of rough sleeping in the city. Completely refurbished in 2012, McGarry House now provides temporary supported accommodation for 30 men and women who find themselves homeless in Limerick City.

McGarry House also provides long term supported accommodation for 37 residents in one, two and three bed apartments. This facility provides individuals with a degree of independent living, while offering supports and life-skills programmes where required. 

The Mid-West Community Detox Programme is also run from McGarry House, and is one of many services offered to residents.

McGarry House also provides a Cold Weather Service that ensures no one is refused entry to the service during particularly cold spells, even if all beds are occupied.

Novas’ Temporary Emergency Provision (TEP) was opened in collaboration with the Limerick Homeless Action Team, in response to the increasing number of adults seeking homeless accommodation in Limerick City.The service provides temporary accommodation from 9pm to 9am for up to 30 adults, in two separate-site locations. Clients who present to the service are often at risk of rough-sleeping. It provides a safe, warm and dry place for people to sleep on a nightly basis, while longer team accommodation in secured. TEP clients are also supported by our Out-of-Hours and Housing First teams.

In 2016 Novas launched a new Housing First programme in partnership with the Limerick Homeless Action Team. Two dedicated Housing First workers were appointed and the remit of the service was extended to support 20 individuals to access and maintain their own accommodation with wraparound supports brought into their homes. Intensive support is provided to tenants, which affords independence, self-sufficiency, community engagement and security of tenure.
Novas’ Housing First Team offers a range of supports to tenants and landlords including a dedicated support team, rent collection arrangements, a 24/7 on-call system and an internal maintenance team.

Brother Stephen Russell House

Brother Stephen Russell House is one of Limerick’s oldest homeless services, accommodating some of the city’s most marginalised men for almost four decades.

Accommodation is provided in seven group homes, each with single en-suite bedrooms and shared communal space. The redevelopment has a disability group home, which caters for homeless people with sensory, intellectual and physical disabilities.

Brother Russell offers residents a home for life and they are no longer considered homeless. Education and recreational activities, such as music and art classes, yoga and day trips are provided to residents through the generosity of volunteers and donations.

The Intensive Family Support Service (IFS) works with families who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. It is largely a preventative service, working to keep the family unit together in their own home. 

Out of Hours Service

This service operates from the premises of the Intensive Family Support Service (IFS). It is funded by and works in conjunction with the Limerick Homeless Action Team. An out-of-hours service for people who are homeless to access emergency and temporary accommodation in Limerick City.

The service aims to provide accommodation for people who find themselves unexpectedly homeless. It co-ordinates the accommodation of all the voluntary agencies in the city and is an essential service in the prevention of rough sleeping in Limerick.

Its opening hours are from 5pm to 9pm each evening and from 12pm to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Outside of these hours, a free phone emergency helpline is available on 1800 606060.

D.I.A.L. House

DIAL House is a six unit residential service which accommodates care leavers with learning disabilities and/or mental health issues, at risk of falling into the cycle of homelessness.

DIAL offers a two-year life programme to residents, teaching them skills in cooking, cleaning, paying bills and money management, in a bid to equip them for independent living. The scheme also works with external agencies to provide professional courses on issues such as self-harm and drug use. Peer led learning is at the core of the DIAL ethos.

Street Outreach

Novas’ Street Outreach service operates 365 days a year, providing a warm meal, support and advise to marginalised people in Limerick city.

The service in run entirely by our volunteer team. It receives no state funding and is entirely dependent on donations and fundraising. 

The Street Outreach van is parked on Upper William Street in the city from 7pm each evening

Mid-West Community Detox

The Mid-West Community Detox Programme is part of a nationwide initiative supported by the HSE and the Irish College of General Practitioners, developed to assist people wishing to access safer outpatient detoxification from benzodiazepines and/or methadone.
