Showing that there’s always something new to learn, Limerick’s Lifelong Learning Festival kicks off with a real crowd-pleaser this Saturday, April 16th with theThomond Park Showcase - a free, fun, interactive day of learning, activities and workshops for all the family.

The Thomond Park Showcase opens the festival week this Saturday from 11am to 4pm and promises to offer a snapshot of what the festival programme will offer.

From history to fashion and culture, business and personal development to arts and crafts, and from music and dancing to sports and leisure to health studies; all displays, activities and workshops are free for all the family at the Showcase.

FREE events include Happy Feet line dancing, Laughter Yoga, Playground Science, live music, mindful colouring, crazy golf and everyone is invited to participate.

Commenting on the event, Learning Limerick’s Yvonne Lane, said: “The return of the Thomond Park Showcase Day to open the Festival week is very exciting and promises to make this year’s festival the biggest yet! We’re really looking forward to seeing a huge turn-out at Thomond Park on Saturday.”

This year’s festival promises to be the biggest yet, with over 200 events and activities to interest, entertain and engage people of all ages! Now in its sixth year, and with the theme Learning from Each Other in a Changed Limerick, the Lifelong Learning Festival runs from Saturday 16th to Friday 22nd April.

This year’s festival links learning with the 1916 centenary celebrations in Limerick and also the Limerick 2020 bid for European Capital of Culture, and promotes Limerick as a learning and cultural region of excellence. The overall programme for the week offers an incredibly varied selection of performances, debates, taster sessions, tours, demonstrations, activities and workshops.

From the Rising, to Basic First Aid for Parents and 800 Years of Fashion, all the events are open to the public and are organised and run by community groups, schools and colleges, businesses and organisations across the city and county, providing everyone with the opportunity to join in.

The festival was launched on Tuesday 5th April at the Council Chamber, Merchants Quay, by the Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr. Liam Galvin. The Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival is organised by the Learning Limerick Steering Group, a representative group for all of the main stakeholders involved in promoting learning across Limerick City and County.

Speaking at the launch, Learning Limerick’s Chair, Josephine Cotter-Coughlan, described the festival as a ‘truly rewarding experience for all who participate’ and encouraged everyone to come along, join in and ‘bring your family and friends with you!’

Entry is free throughout the week to all events. Free copies of the 2016 Festival Programme are now available throughout Limerick and on www.Limerick.ie/LoveLearning, with daily updates also on Facebook ‘Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival’ and on Twitter @LimkLearnFest.
