Rob Mortell, a 26-year-old trainee tax adviser from Limerick, has become the youngest Irish person to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Rob Mortell confirmed he had reached the peak of the world’s highest mountain when he sent a message from his GPS tracker at 6am on Monday (23rd May 2016).

The record was previously held by Mark Quinn, also of Limerick, who climbed the mountain aged 27 in 2011.

A statement on his expedition Facebook page 'Mortell - Everest Record Expedition 2016' reads "I am humbled and thrilled to be the youngest Irish person to stand on the top of the world. This achievement has been four years in the making. I did not do this alone. It was made possible by the help and support of my family, girlfriend, friends, colleagues and sponsors. I look forward to coming home to celebrate in the next few days."
