The One Million Stars (OMS) project is part of a global movement that brings local communities together to engage in a creative project that demonstrates support and solidarity to women who face domestic violence. OMS was first brought to Ireland in 2019, and in 2021 it was introduced to Limerick communities through a partnership between the Hunt Museum, ADAPT Domestic Abuse Services, Mental Health Ireland, CWELL at University of Limerick and Limerick City and County Council.
The organisations joined forces to roll out the project across the city and county.
From Limerick's project initial launch on International Women’s Day, 8th March 2021, the team has been working with community groups and organisations across Limerick including Limerick Youth Service, students, Active Retirement groups, ADAPT Service Users, Traveller and Womens’ Groups and many more. Over the past nine months, these communities came together to weave decorative, colourful stars in the spirit of creating one voice where we can come together and stand in solidarity with women who experience violence. The 8-pointed stars created, are a symbol of light, hope and solidarity.
The culmination of this work will be unveiled at a special launch on Wednesday 1st December from 5pm to 6.30pm via Zoom, where a beautiful display of all the woven stars will be revealed at the Hunt Museum. All are welcome to join the event, please email outreach@huntmuseum.com to book your place.
Gillian Baker, Training and Development Coordinator with ADAPT Domestic Abuse Services, and one of the Limerick project organisers, says about the launch: "There has been such great energy around the project and momentum has been steadily growing throughout the year. The support from local communities has been amazing and I am really looking forward to the events coming up and seeing our wonderful installation displayed at The Hunt Museum for December 2021".
