Limerick is rightly famed as the sporting capital of Ireland. Here, sport transcends all class boundaries and 'the docker and the doctor compete in the field of sport on an equal footing'.
Limerick's love of rugby is world renowned and it is home to the iconic Thomond Park Stadium, the scene of many memorable Munster Rugby clashes. Our passionate Munster rugby supporters have been described as among the best fans in the world.
Gaelic football, hurling, golf, horse-racing, walking and cycling are also particularly popular pursuits in Limerick.
The support and passion for sport are the key ingredients which have made Limerick Ireland’s true sporting capital.
Limerick is nationally acknowledged as having excellent sporting infrastructure and conferencing facilities.
These include the new greyhound stadium recently opened at a cost of €20m, this magnificent Thomond Park Stadium which opened in 2008, the Gaelic Grounds, the University of Limerick Sports Arena, Limerick Racecourse, not to mention all the individual clubs, activity providers, swimming pools, tennis clubs and Mountain bike trails in Ballyhoura.
