This lecture will explore the historical background to masked ritual performance in Ireland, and its development in recent times.
Billy Mag Fhloinn is the director of Pagan Rave, an ongoing performance-based project which aims to re-imagine folk traditions and calendar customs of Ireland. He will be discussing his inspiration and methodology in the creation of masks, costumes and ritual for contemporary audiences.
Billy is a native of Limerick. He holds a PhD in Irish Folklore, and a BA in Archaeology, from UCD. As well as lecturing and tutoring at university level, he also works in television and media, is a musician, and occasionally works as a tour guide in the Dingle Peninsula.
