CANCELLED: Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan 2020

Monday 13th - Sunday 19th July
  • Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan 2020

Due to Covid-19 restrictions Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan 2020 has been cancelled.

Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan 2020, the largest provincial fleadh in Ireland, will draw thousands of musicians, singers, dancers, storytellers and visitors from the six counties of Munster and beyond to Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, for an annual celebration of our Irish cultural traditions.

The town of Newcastle West is steeped in tradition and has previously hosted Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan in 2007 and 1965.

An action-packed programme of events for the 2020 Munster Fleadh is currently being compiled and will include a wide selection of outdoor entertainment, concerts, céilithe, workshops, sessions, and most importantly the Munster Fleadh competitions where competitors from the six counties of Munster will compete for a place in the All-Ireland Fleadh in Mullingar.

What's On

An integral part of Fleadh na Mumhan each year is Scoil Fonn agus Amhráin Workshops, providing tuition in slow-air playing and traditional singing to scholarship winners from the six counties of Munster. The Slide and Polka Workshops is also a hugely popular part of the Fleadh programme.  This workshop is open to any interested participants.

Slide and Polka Workshop

The annual Slide and Polka Workshop in conjunction with Fleadh na Mumhan will take place in Desmond College, tutored by a well-known West Limerick musician. Don't miss this great opportunity to improve your repertoire of polkas and slides and to learn from a master of the Sliabh Luachra tradition!
Workshop cost: €15 (including lunch)

Scoil Fonn & Amhrán na Mumhan

An intensive one day series of workshops on slow air playing, and singing - open to scholarship winners in the six county Fleadhanna only.
Registration €10

For many the most important part of Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan are the Fleadh competitions as competitors from the six counties of Munster will gather in Newcastle West seeking a coveted Munster title and a place in the All-Ireland 2020 in Mullingar.

An exciting programme of concerts will take place during Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan 2020.

Set and Céilí Dancing

There will be top-class dancing to be seen at the Munster senior and junior set-dancing competitions. Dancers will be well catered for at the Fleadh Céilithe.

Traditional Singing - Fleadh Singer's Club

The Singers Club has for many years been an integral part of all Fleadh Cheoil. Everyone, be they singer or listener, is welcome to share in this unique night. The beauty of the singers club lies in the hearing of such a variety of traditional songs. Admission is free.

Fleadh Session Trail

During the Fleadh weekened, the Fleadh Session Trail will feature a series of Pub Session's guaranteed to delight all followers of Irish traditional music. With a selection of Ireland's finest musicians coming to town, make sure to pay a visit to all the Newcastle West pubs hosting Irish traditional sessions during the weekend. Listen to some wonderful traditional music, or bring along your own instrument and join in.

Street Entertainment

There will be an abundance of free open-air entertainment with some of Limerick and Munster's finest local musicians and groups taking to the stage in Newcastle West town centre over the weekend.

Musicians are also encouraged to bring their instruments and join into any street sessions or feel free to start their own. We would especially encourage all musicians to enter in our Street Entertainment Competition in Newcastle West town centre.

Remember that there is no busking allowed at the Fleadh and we ask you to respect this request. This is standard Comhaltas policy for all Fleadhanna Cheoil around the country.

An Ghaeilge

An entire programme of Irish themed events and experiences will run during the Fleadh weekend, including Ciorcal Comhra, Irish singing, guided walks and tours, Irish language talks etc.

Visit Ionad na Gaeilge in Desmond College - a venue set aside for all those interested in the Irish language. The venue contains many displays of interesting material and the overseas visitor always gets a feel for Irish culture at this venue.
