Only a stones throw away are the Cratloe Woods, which mark the Limerick / Clare border. Cratloe gets its name from the Irish for land of the Sally trees. Besides the small village of Cratloe are the Cratloe forests, which were originally primeval oak woods, are now a State forest on the slopes of Woodcock Hill. It is believed that the beams of the roof in Westminster Hall came from the Cratloe forest.

In the ninth century the Mc Namara territory was invaded by the Men of Ulster and took the wood that built the roof of the royal palace of Aileach near to Derry. There are pleasant woodland walks and picnic tables to enjoy the forests. The site is operated by Coillte, a State owned company that operates a number of forestry areas throughout the country.
