Opening Doors launch, a unique anthology of writing by older people

  • Opening Doors Launch

A unique anthology of writing by older people from the Limerick Writers’ Centre called Opening Doors is to be launched by Prof Eoin Devereux of UL on Thursday 6th Dec in Chez le Fab, Arthurs Quay Park, Limerick.

The anthology project is supported by Creative Ireland and Limerick City and County Council and is part of Limerick Culture and Creativity Strategy 2018-2022, and is the fruit of over 6 weeks participation by two groups of older people from Limerick city and county.

The groups, under the tutorage of award winning poet Ron Carey, met at the Barrington Street centre each week learning the rudiments of writing in various genres. The result of that work Opening Doors will now be published by Limerick Writers’ Centre.

Ron Carey, the editor of Opening Doors says “Some of this year’s group members were with us last year, when we ran another very successful course, culminating in a fine Anthology of their work, River People. And they helped to give a warm welcome to the newcomers and make them feel at home from the start. This year the course has become even more popular, expanding into two sessions, Saturday morning and afternoon. We have kept to the principle that we go forward together as a single group and worked hard to make the course as varied and as interesting as possible.”

Director of the Limerick Writers’ Centre, Dominic Taylor who is passionate about the benefits for individuals and society when people engage in a creative activity like writing, says “At our Creative Writing Course for Older People we offer a collective experience that allows individuals to lift and challenge themselves, into unveiling their creative selves. From absolute beginners to the more experienced participants we offer a perspective that would be difficult for someone working alone to experience.”

The Limerick Writers' Centre holds multiple literary and artistic events throughout the year in Limerick City. The Limerick Writers' Centre is also an established publisher of poetry and short fiction in the region.

The book will be launched in Chez le Fab Thurs 6th Dec at 8pm by Prof. Eoin Devereux of UL and all are welcome to attend. It will be available from O’Mahony’s Bookshop and on-line at the Limerick Writers' Centre.
