International experts meet in LIT to discuss the future of social media

  • LIT Conference

More than 100 international delegates will visit Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) on June 21 and 22 for the European Conference on Social Media.

For the first time in its five year history, the conference will be held in Ireland attracting speakers from South Africa, Mexico, USA, Russia, New Zealand, Canada, India, China, Australia, the Middle East, and from all across Europe.

The prestigious event allows for experts in social media come together to discuss research and share and develop ideas on this relatively new, but extremely significant form of communication.

Having previously been held in England, Portugal, France and Lithuania, the  conference attracts an international audience spanning 40 countries and is made up of academic scholars, public sector workers, practitioners and individuals who are engaged in various aspects of the social media industry.

A number of leading academic journals select papers from the conference for further development and publication.

Senior Lecturer and Researcher of Information Technology and Management at LIT and Programme Chair, Dr Niall Corcoran, was instrumental in attracting the prestigious event to Limerick and LIT.

The leading social media lecturer has presented research papers on social networking and practice in organisations at a number of previous ECSM conferences.

Dr Corcoran said, “Social media research stratifies a number of disciplines including technology, information systems, business and the social sciences, and is becoming increasingly important as social media becomes ubiquitous in organisations and society. We urgently need to understand the impact of social media, how best to use it productively and ethically, and how to overcome and prevent the negative aspects that are becoming increasingly obvious as its use progresses.

“It is only through the use of applied and practical research methodologies that we can achieve this. ECSM provides a valuable collaborative space to bring much of this worldwide research together, where ideas can be shared and developed, and important connections established.”

Among the keynote speakers at this year’s ECSM are Stephen O’Leary, MD of Olytico, Limerick’s Shane McCarthy, CEO of BlueChief Social, and digital marketing expert Eimear McManus also from Limerick.

President of LIT and ECSM Conference Chair Professor Vincent Cunnane said, “ECSM offers a unique opportunity for researchers and practitioners to network, explore new ideas and learn from each other, and we look forward to facilitating this work here in LIT.”

“I am delighted to welcome the fifth European Conference on Social Media to Limerick.  We in LIT will ensure that our conference guests enjoy a successful conference amid the history, culture and scenery of Limerick City and the mid-west of Ireland.”
