Limerick Swimming Club is a competitive swimming club catering for young boys and girls from 8 years up to 18+ years.

Limerick Swimming Club consists of 3 squad groups. Swimmers are placed in groups according to ability. Progress through the various groups will be dependent upon the swimmer's development and attitude to training. Progression from squad to squad is dependent on time trial performance, commitment to training and input from the coaches.

Development Squad (C)

This squad is our usual entry group for young swimmers. They train four hours per week. The swimmer is introduced to competitive swimming in an enjoyable atmosphere that is not too far removed from what they would have been used to in their previous teaching club. Training is aerobically based with a small speed element. Attention is also paid to stroke analysis and correction.

At the beginning of the season, swimmers are segregated into lanes depending on ability. They would normally progress from basic level to preparation for entry to B Squad over a full season or so.

B Squad

This squad is the next step up from the Development (C) squad. They train 6 hours per week. Stroke development continues usually over the full range of swimming styles, although the coaches will begin to focus on specific abilities within individual swimmers and encourage the development of same. Swimmers themselves also begin to recognise their own competitive ability.

Attention is paid by the coaches to a range of physical attributes including the various elements of physical fitness and body adaptation as they relate to the swimmer's preferred strokes and/or distance.

A Squad

This squad trains approximately 8.5 hours per week. The intention here is to develop the swimmer to Munster, National or possibly International Level. Strong commitment is required for this group of swimmers. At this level, swimming would normally be the person's primary sporting commitment. Swimmers are expected to swim at all competitions for which they are selected.

Coaching becomes very specific in terms of stroke and whether the swimmer is suited to sprint, middle or long distance events. Swimmers may have the opportunity to take part in Munster and / or Irish Team squad training.

Limerick Swimming Club participates in Galas throughout the Munster region. A schedule of events for the region is prepared at the beginning of the season. The events are graded to suit the different levels of ability and performance of swimmers as they progress through the squads.
