The castle and estate at Birr, have been owned by the Parsons family for almost 400 years. In this time, Birr Castle Demesne has seen a host of scientific and technological achievement, much of which has changed the world.
To help preserve this heritage for future generations, the "Birr Scientific and Heritage Foundation" was formed.
The Foundation was established by the Earl of Rosse in 1995 to 'preserve and maintain for public benefit the whole of the castle, gardens, demesne, telescope and stable block and to facilitate and encourage access to their use and enjoyment'. (Memo and articles of association)
Most importantly, the Birr Scientific and Heritage Foundation is a charitable body (107550) and completely independent of Government. We rely for income on membership fees and revenue raised from our commercial operations. The Chairman is the former ambassador to Washington, Sean Donlon, who was also Chancellor of the University of Limerick and Chairman of its Governing Authority.
