The Medieval Village of Askeaton

  • Askeaton Medieval Village

The medieval village of Askeaton was once a stronghold of the Munster Geraldines, the Anglo-Norman Earls of Desmond. Today, the impressive ruins of Askeaton's Desmond Castle, in the centre of the town on a rocky island on the River Deel, dominates the town.

The Hell Fire Club (a gentleman’s club dating back to the mid-1700s) and the ruins of the well preserved 14th Century Franciscan Friary are also special features of the town.

A well equipped leisure complex and a service facility for camper vans are among the amenities available to visitors. Local guide Anthony Sheehy conducts tours of the town by appointment or through Askeaton Tourist Information Point.
