O'Connell Street - Limerick Urban Centre Revitalisation

Following a competitive process Limerick City and County Council has secured €4.1 million in European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) via the Designated Urban Centre Grants Scheme.

This fund is administered by the Southern Regional Assembly and was established to enhance the architectural heritage of our cities and towns, while encouraging sustainable development, which boosts the economic, social and environmental conditions within Irish urban areas. Most importantly, this fund investment will help to improve the quality of life of the communities that live, work and socialise in our urban centres.

The LUCROC project, which is currently at Feasibility Concept Phase, is now supported by council and brings the estimated investment to approximately €9.1 million. This commitment to the revitalisation of O’Connell Street, the heart of the Limerick/Shannon gateway, will result in quantifiable improvements to urban mobility and the urban environment.

This vision will be achieved through a specially targeted infrastructure and citizen investment programme specifically designed for O’Connell Street (the area between the junctions of Denmark Street and Barrington Street, approximately 786 metres in length).

Aims of the Programme

  • Improve the public realm
  • Regenerate the urban fabric
  • Reduce air pollution
  • Promote noise reduction

In addition, based on our work as Ireland’s First Smarter Travel Demonstration Area 2012-2016, we will advance actions to promote walking, cycling, electric vehicle use and public transport to, from and within O’Connell Street. Smarter travel information will also be introduced to the urban centre in formats required by our citizens.

The objective of the Feasibility Concept Phase is to identify key constraints, to develop feasible options and to carry out a comprehensive assessment. With your support we will decide upon a preferred programme of action which will form the basis for the detailed design to follow. We want to inform you of the status of the LUCROC project and to invite you to have YOUR say.

Following a competitive process Limerick City and County Council have now appointed Arup as design consultants, with Nicholas de Jong & Associates providing architectural expertise. The LUCROC team will be supported by a range of experts, external and internal to Limerick City and County Council, to support the design and delivery of the project.

The LUCROC team is now seeking information from you and your community in order to realise a place which helps us improve our economy and society, as well as our built and natural environment.

Have YOUR say! Submit your comments

The project team is seeking to combine ideas from members of the public, interests groups and public representatives, to achieve an appropriate balance between the various travel modes seeking to use the street, be they pedestrian, cyclist, public transport, delivery vehicles and private cars. Your contribution to the design process may be submitted by email.

Please Note: Reference O’Connell Street or LUCROC in your emails and letters. Thank you.
