Retailers Responsibility Regarding Electrical Items (WEEE) and Batteries

Any retailer who sells electrical and electronic equipment (anything with a plug or battery) and / or industrial /automotive /portable batteries MUST register with either ERP (European Recycling Platform) or Limerick City and County Council.

Retailer Registration

If you register with ERP (European Recycling Platform) there is a free once off online registration available on Licences.ie.

Please arrange to display your retailer certificate of registration on your premises.

The alternative is to register with Limerick City and County Council - €200 on an annual basis – application form available on request. Contact +353 61 556489, for further information.

“Take back” of Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment and Waste Batteries. (anything with a plug or battery)

Registered retailers of electrical and electronic equipment (shops) must promote and arrange for the free “take back” and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment on a “one for one” “like for like” basis. For example if you purchase a toaster, you are entitled to bring a toaster back to the retailer for recycling.

Please see below for statutory notices which must be displayed at the point of sale of registered retailers. Non compliance can attract a fixed penalty notice to the amount of €500.

Retailer Advertising:

Any retailer advertising household electrical and electronic equipment and batteries must include the following wording in ANY advertisement

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and waste batteries must  never be placed in any of your household wheelie bins. WEEE is taken back free of charge at electrical retail outlets on a “one-for-one” “like for like” basis. There is a container for small waste batteries in your local store. Local authority civic amenity facilities also take back WEEE and Waste batteries free of charge. WEEE and Waste Battery recycling is FREE.

Registered retailers must, on a regular basis, arrange to have the Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment/Waste Batteries accepted as "take back" from the public collected from their premises by the compliance scheme ERP (European Recycling Platform).
