The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllr Daniel Butler has planted an oak tree in the People’s Park in Limerick in memory of those who have lost their lives or who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The planting of this oak tree is in memory of the Limerick people who experienced loss, hardship and pain during the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020. The tree also symbolises the resilience of the Limerick people. By nurturing and caring for the oak tree sa its planted, it allows it to cement its roots and begin to grow into a mighty oak tree which, in turn, will provide shelter to many. Rather like the way people across Limerick looked out for and cared for members of their family and friends and wider communities as we battled the pandemic together.”

The plaque placed at the foot of the tree reads
